You know what vehicle's cup holders have room for mugs? The 1st-gen Mazda MPV. It had this little flip-up cup holder on the side of the passenger seat. My neighbors across the street when I was a kid had one. Whenever their dad drove our carpool, he always put a full, regular, non-travel coffee mug in that cup holder. This struck me as odd, even though I was like 10. He never spilled it while I was in the car though.
